The 1950s FJ Clock by Finn Juhl: A Scandinavian Modern Icon

The FJ Clock, designed by celebrated Danish architect Finn Juhl, is a timeless piece of mid-century Scandinavian design. Originally created in 1950 for the Trusteeship Council chamber at the United Nations building in New York, this clock embodies Juhl’s visionary approach to form and function.

Finn Juhl, born in 1912, studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and became one of the most influential Danish architects of the 1950s. Known for his bold sculptural forms and meticulous detailing, Juhl once said, “One cannot create happiness with beautiful objects, but one can ruin quite a lot of happiness with bad ones.” This philosophy perfectly encapsulates his commitment to thoughtful, lasting design.

The FJ Clock was crafted to complement the architectural environment of the UN Trusteeship Council, where it still hangs today. ARCHITECTMADE’s edition of the clock is half the size of the original, making it ideal for contemporary living spaces while preserving the spirit of Juhl’s iconic design.

Featuring a circular form that highlights the natural warmth of teak wood and an aluminum dial reflecting minimalist elegance, the FJ Clock captures the essence of Scandinavian modernism. Its understated beauty and precise craftsmanship make it much more than a timekeeper — it is a sculptural element that enriches any interior.

Care Instructions:
Made from certified Tectona Grandis teak and treated with teak oil, the clock requires gentle maintenance to preserve its natural beauty. Clean with a soft cloth or sponge and mild soapy water, then apply teak oil once dry to prevent the wood from drying out.
